The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) is a premier National Professional body established by Act of Parliament to develop and regulate the Profession of Company Secretaries. ICSI imparts training in Company Secretaryship by Distance Learning (by correspondence) enabling students to qualify as Company Secretaries. The Institute provides “Course Material” for all the subjects at the time of Registration. There is also provision for Optional Oral Coaching classes.
Stages to become a Company Secretary :
In addition, the student has to undergo Practical Training for about 15 months which a student may opt to start after passing the Executive Programme. The Student who would like to join the Company Secretary Course after passing the Graduation (Example: B.com) has to undergo two stages of the Company Secretaryship
Company Secretary (CS) Foundation Course is an eight months duration course which is the first level study on the path of becoming a Company Secretary. The course provided by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (I.C.S.I) is a mixture of postal tuition and optional coaching classes. Study material is provided to the student at the time of admission. The CS Foundation Course covers the study of subjects and topics such as legal aspects of taxation, labour laws, corporate law, accounting, auditing or financial analysis etc. It is beneficial in getting a suitable position in the company.
Students should register themselves with the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (I.C.S.I) and are required to pass the Foundation Examination within 3 years from the date of admission. Registration for foundation course is open throughout the year. The exams for the foundation course are usually held in December and June every year. The Registration for each examination should be done at least nine months before the month in which the examination is held. The minimum duration of the course is eight months.
CS Foundation Registration is open throughout the year. Candidates registered up to and including the month of March are eligible to take Foundation examination earliest in December in the same year and those registered up to and including September can take up the examination in June next year subject to satisfactory completion of coaching. NOTE: The candidate is advised in his own interest to satisfy himself/herself that he/she is re-registered immediately for training for the excess leave period if any, as on the date of filling up the examination form and before the commencement of examination (as applicable). In other words a candidate must have either completed the training or must be in service as on the first day of the month in which the examination is to be held and the balance period of training must not be more than twelve months including excess leave, if any.
